Artist Statement
The movement investigated with these serial paintings holds special significance to me. This is the image I have of my friend recovering from her brain surgery. All too frequently I’ve watched her clutch at the back of her neck, massage it to relieve pain, and straighten into poised posture as it ebbs. The incision marks the beginning of a cyclical post-op journey. Highs and lows meld together. The physical posturing of my friend intimates mental posture. I envisage encased and shifting mindsets via contours of her frame. With paint, I attempt to remedy the dissonance of seen/supposed by producing a visual product that helps cohere an unstable reality. The fracturing and fusing lines stylistically investigate barriers against and entries into my friend’s experience. The color play and brushwork resonate with her spectrum of moods. The hidden face allows the kneeling figure to stand as a universal representative. This work is personally compelling, but I invite viewers to enter into this space where they too may resonate or meditate on the impossibility and intimacy of witnessing the internal world of our closest others.
