Artist Statement

My aim is to visually represent the kinesthetic process of peeling back layers as a metaphor of transition. The translucent layers obscure, giving the “almost there, but not yet” sense that the idea of a cusp is akin to. Vision for the future clarifies the present. Light can shine through, illuminating the hands at work and allowing the colors to play upon the filmy layers. I endeavored for the hands to convey a tactile, productive determination. And I wanted the painting to demonstrate a kind of tangible, hopeful present that is premised on anticipation of the future. This visual metaphor helps me locate myself as an artist. I am working towards a clearer sense of vocation. It is not a breakthrough as much as a painstaking process. It is a feeling that accompanies progress.
